Good Red Herring is a detective novel set in (a fictional county called) Muinbeo, featuring Detective Chief Inspector Hal Cole (a vampire) and his Deputy, Swan Bateman (an aura reading mostly-human). The initial investigation centres around the death by stabbing of Bay-Badger Maguire, found dead near the Wooden O, a crime apparently without motive. Almost everyone questioned in relation to the murder has something to hide; Immo, the woman Bay was going to visit the night she was killed, Shearwater, one of Bay’s best friends, even the seemingly innocent butcher Ceder, who sold fish to Bay. When a second murder is committed, Cole and Bateman find that though Bay’s death was definitely murder but without any evidence of motive, there are several motives for Marl Fitzwilliams’ death, which probably is not murder. To add to their difficulties, there is an attempt to damage the sacred site of Ciplacti’s Ear, an attempt on the life of an artist-in-residence, an academic feud and a rogue werwolf to keep the Guardians of Muinbeo busy.
